AeroMobile Shows GPRS Mobile In-Flight Data Service with Live Demo at WAEA Booth 1021, Hamburg
September 19, 2005
Annapolis, Maryland and Oslo, Norway—AeroMobile™, the company
leading the development of in-flight mobile cellular communications,
will demonstrate its newly developed in-flight data service at the
World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) convention this week
in Hamburg, Germany, Sept. 20-23.
AeroMobile’s data capability allows sending and receiving mobile
data from cell phones and PDAs. The service supports General Packet
Radio Service (GPRS) communications, including hand-held data communication
devices such as Blackberries.
The data service uses the Inmarsat Swift (64kbs) and SwiftBroadband
(432kbps) aeronautical satellite services as well as other broadband
aircraft communications links. AeroMobile supports all GPRS-based
applications, including WAP, web access and E-mail.
Bernt Fanghol, Telenor New Business Vice President, Mobile Connectivity,
said, “As aircraft broadband connections come online, we anticipate
mobile data services will become an essential feature of in-flight
communications. Globally the number of GPRS users will increase to
several hundred million in the next couple of years, and Blackberries
and other hand-held devices have become a vital part of business life.
GPRS services are simple, efficient and provide real value for money.
It is estimated that 40 percent of European businesses will be using
mobile data services by 2008.”
AeroMobile has commissioned new research into the potential take-up
of in-flight data services and the results of this work will be available
in a few weeks. This work will be used to further develop the product
offering in terms of pricing, service specifications and future enhancements.
“Research has already shown that SMS texting is likely
to be one of the most popular forms of in-flight communications, with
E-mail close behind,” stated David Coiley, ARINC Director Aircraft
Mobility Connectivity. “E-mail is also predicted to be a key
driver for mobile data services, with 90 billion being sent by 2009.
AeroMobile’s mission is to get the right solution in place to
meet all passengers’ needs, and we will add these data capabilities
to AeroMobile’s existing voice and text messaging services as
soon as aircraft communications systems are upgraded to the new, higher
bandwidth links.”
AeroMobile will also be demonstrating its cellular voice and text
messaging services this week at WAEA Booth 1021 using current Inmarsat
aircraft satellite communications systems.
