Greater Bandwidth of Inmarsat I-4 Satellites
November 22, 2005
Annapolis, Maryland—The recent launch of a second Inmarsat I-4
satellite is extremely good news for business passengers looking forward
to regular use of mobile telephones and data devices while in flight.
AeroMobile™, a joint venture of ARINC Incorporated and Telenor ASA,
says the new generation of Inmarsat I-4 satellites will be key to
desirable new high-speed data services for passengers.
AeroMobile is currently the only company to offer proven mobile (cell)
phone service for passengers in flight. The higher bandwidth of the
SwiftBroadbandTM platform on the new Inmarsat I-4 satellites will
allow AeroMobile to provide new in-flight data applications, such
as GPRS and Wi-Fi data for passenger PDAs, BlackBerrys and laptops.
Passengers on the recent world record flight of a Boeing 777-200LR
Worldliner used AeroMobile’s phone and SMS text messaging extensively.
These are based on the “classic” Inmarsat technology found
on more than 1900 aircraft globally—chiefly long-haul jets.
SwiftBroadband’s new functionality, cost-effective hardware,
and service tariffs will now allow AeroMobile to implement passenger
communications on short-haul aircraft as well. “AeroMobile
is already breaking ground using Inmarsat’s classic services.
More than 330 calls and 150 text messages were made on the recent
world record flight by Boeing,” said Graham Lake, Managing Director,
ARINC Europe, Middle East, and Africa. “We also know today’s
business passengers want to use their BlackBerrys and PDAs on board
flights to stay in touch with the office. Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband
platform will allow us to provide this much-wanted level of service.”
“Inmarsat congratulates AeroMobile for its achievements
on the Boeing 777-200LR Worldliner flight, and we believe the increased
capability available through SwiftBroadband will be the perfect platform
for AeroMobile to deliver broadband passenger data and voice applications,”
stated Paul Griffith, Vice President, Product Management and Marketing,
Inmarsat. “AeroMobile is very pleased to cooperate
with Inmarsat, the world leading company for global mobile satellite
communications,” stated Bernt Fanghol, Vice President, Telenor
New Business. “We were thrilled when the launch of the second
Inmarsat I-4 satellite was successful. This will be crucial in bringing
the SwiftBroadband product to aircraft operators and users, and allowing
AeroMobile to enhance its product portfolio.”
