AeroMobile ™ becomes a member of the GSM Association
London, 7 March 2006 – AeroMobile, a joint venture between ARINC and Telenor,
the leading developer of in-flight mobile (cell) phone services, is pleased to
anounce that it has been granted membership of the GSM Association. AeroMobile’s
membership of the GSMA is a further key step in AeroMobile’s market-leading progress
towards implementation of operational services on aircraft in 2006.
AeroMobile is the first commercially available in-flight communications service
which allows passengers to make and receive calls or SMS messages using their
own handset. All calls are invoiced through their network provider, using roaming
services, so membership of the GSM Association (GSMA) is an important step forward
for AeroMobile. The GSMA membership allows the use of GSMA roaming agreements
and algorithms, and means that AeroMobile’s network can be made available through
International Roaming Agreements to any other GSM operator worldwide.
“Becoming a GSMA member is a major milestone for us and clearly demonstrates
the maturity of AeroMobile both with regard to our aircraft and ground infrastructures”
said Graham Lake , President, AeroMobile. “Acceptance from the GSM Association
is a quality mark and shows that AeroMobile is a fully integrated and independent
GSM operator. The commercial use of GSM services onboard aircraft has taken another
step forward and will soon be a reality for all passengers.”
GSMA Membership is open to licensed 2G and 3GSM mobile network operators committed
to implementing the GSM family of technologies (GSM, GPRS, EDGE and 3GSM) for
digital wireless communications.
“The development of AeroMobile in an environment where there is currently no
service will expand the service availability that GSM network providers can give
to their customers and will allow them to look for increased roaming revenues.
The customers will also benefit from being able to use their mobile phones on
aircraft for business and leisure calls and messages. Further development of the
AeroMobile service will also allow the use of PDA and other data exchange devices
such as BlackBerrys,” added Lake.
AeroMobile officially became a member of the GSM Association on 3rd March 2006.
