| AeroMobile for Passengers:
Using mobile communications is now part of everyday life for over
2 billion people around the World. Whether it’s to chat or
text with friends and family, keep in contact with business colleagues,
surf the Web or email, mobile phones and PDAs now help us communicate
with others in a simple, convenient and cost-effective way while
we are on the move.
In parallel, developments in air transport mean that more of us
are now flying more frequently and over longer distances than ever
before. Passengers increasingly want to keep in touch during those
flights. AeroMobile’s market research clearly shows that a
significant number of airline passengers do wish to have the choice
and convenience of being able to use their mobile phone or PDA in-flight.
AeroMobile is easy and safe to use. You can send and receive text
messages and voice calls using your own phone in exactly the same
way as you do on the ground. Call charges are affordable simply
billed to your regular mobile phone bill as an international ‘roaming’
call. When aircraft communications systems between the aircraft
and the ground are expanded with broadband capability AeroMobile
will offer data services such as GPRS and wi-fi. We are working
to implement these services from late 2006.
AeroMobile’s technology has been developed by experts with
many years experience in mobile and aviation communications and
systems. The system is specifically designed to have no impact on
aircraft systems and to meet all appropriate aircraft safety and
airworthiness requirements. AeroMobile is only installed and operated
on aircraft where it has received all necessary approvals.”
It will be possible to use your mobile phone in-flight only on
those aircraft that are installed with ‘pico cell’ systems
such as AeroMobile, and only when the airline cabin staff indicate
that it is possible to do so. The system will be operated only during
the ‘cruise’ phase of flight (i.e. after take-off and
before landing). Passengers must continue to ensure that their mobile
phones and PDAs are switched off at all other times such as take-off
and descent prior to landing, and whenever instructed by airline
staff.
